What is Phototherapy?

Phototherapy or light therapy is a prescription treatment that is prescribed by a dermatologist. Phototherapy involves exposing the skin to ultraviolet light and is used to treat skin disorders such as:

  • Psoriasis
  • Eczema
  • Vitiligo

A phototherapy unit can range from hand-held and table-top devices for spot treatment of small areas to cabinet or “walk-in” units for patients requiring full body treatment.

The medical lamps in these phototherapy units emit ultraviolet (UV) light in a wavelength that creates changes within the skin cells. The cells in most patients then begin to behave normally, which reduces or eliminates the symptoms of the skin disease.

With so many treatment options why choose phototherapy?

It’s Safer

Narrow Band UVB phototherapy is considered safe enough for pregnant women and children to use, and has none of the serious side effects associated with competing biological drug therapies.

It's More Affordable

Home phototherapy units are reasonably priced and covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance companies. Other treatments such as drug therapies can thousands of dollars each year.

It Works Faster

Narrow Band Phototherapy on average can clear symptoms between 4-5 weeks. That means clear skin twice as fast other treatment options.

It's More Effective

Statistics have shown consistently high rates of clearance when using phototherapy.
